CVSA Roadcheck 2021

Posted on: February 12th, 2021 9:15 am

Every year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) performs an International Roadcheck across the country. To help you prepare for the CVSA Roadcheck 2021, we’ve provided information below about what to expect when it’s time to inspect!

What is the CVSA Roadcheck 2021?

While daily roadside safety inspections are happening every day, the CVSA Roadcheck 2021 is a three-day, highly visible event that serves as a reminder for drivers about the importance of commercial motor vehicle safety.  Each year, the CVSA emphasizes a different aspect of violations. This year, the CVSA Roadcheck is being held May 4-6 and the emphasis is on lighting and hours of service.

What should drivers expect?

While the emphasis in 2021 is on lighting and hours of service, inspectors will perform the North American Standard Level I Inspection during the CVSA Roadcheck 2021. This inspection is a 37-step procedure that focuses on driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness, including:

  • Brake, exhaust and fuel systems
  • Cargo securement
  • Coupling devices
  • Driveline/driveshaft components
  • Driver’s seat
  • Frames
  • Lighting devices
  • Steering mechanisms
  • Tires and suspensions
  • Van and open-top trailer bodies
  • Wheels, rims and hubs
  • Windshield wipers

The inspection also includes a driver evaluation for operating credentials, hours-of-service documentation, seat belt use, illness and fatigue, as well as alcohol or drug possession or impairment. In addition, inspectors may decide to extend their inspections to other categories or levels of review depending on the situation.

Drivers and vehicles that pass a Level I or Level V Inspection will receive a CVSA decal. As a result, vehicles with a valid CVSA decal are typically not re-inspected within the three-month period the decal is valid, which allows inspectors to focus on vehicles without a valid decal. If, however, a driver or vehicle does not pass the inspection, the inspector may render the vehicle as out of service until the issue is fixed.
